Earlier this year, I wrote a feature comedy spec script with a Europe-based writing partner. It was our first time working together and we had to figure out a writing process that included breaking story.

We settled on Google Docs to brainstorm ideas. That worked great. But how to take that content and organize it into a coherent scene-by-scene outline?

If we had been in the same room together, we would have ended up using index cards, posting them on the wall as we went along. But we weren’t in the same room. We weren’t even in the same continent.

Because of the pandemic, many TV writers I knew told me about how they were participating remotely in writers rooms using an online platform called WritersRoom Pro. Designed by a professional TV showrunner, it uses virtual index cards which you can group into Seasons, Episodes, and Characters.

Since my writing partner and I were using it to break the story of a feature film project, we wondered how effective it would be for our purposes. After we signed up, it took a few emails and zoom sessions with the company’s tech people to work through our specific needs. They were extremely helpful and open to our suggestions.

In the end, we did complete a scene-by-scene outline using a combination of Google Docs and WritersRoom Pro. And the script. It’s just going out to people in Hollywood. I hope they feel like it’s as funny as I do!

For those of you who work with a writing partner remotely or prefer to work with virtual index cards, I recommend WritersRoom Pro.
