WM, one of my screenwriting mantras is this: "In a movie, action is meaningless without meaningful characters." I would imagine it's nearly impossible for a writer to generate a truly unique angle on a fight sequence. Nowadays with CGI, the spectacle can become rather boring (I actually fell asleep a few months back in a movie during an action sequence).

But one thing a writer can do is create unique characters in the midst of an engaging psychological journey. If the audience connects with them emotionally, then action sequences take on a whole other level of meaning.

I like what you mentor said: Instead of I don't like or do like, ask why did the filmmakers make this or that narrative choice. What other options could have been explored. That makes film analysis a learning opportunity. Thanks for that insight!
