WGA Reviewing Deal That Studios Call Their “Best & Final Offer”

Problem is, there is no such thing as a “best & final offer.” The only offer that’s final is the one the WGA votes to accept.

In the latest example of AMPTP using the trades to disseminate their negotiating tactics, this time via Deadline:

1:22 PM: A deal in the latest negotiations between the WGA and studios CEOs to end the nearly five-month-long writers strike looks within sight.
During the meeting today at the AMPTP Sherman Oaks office, the parties appear to have essentially untangled their stalemate over AI, writing room staffing levels, and the last remaining matters of contention.
UPDATED, 6:02 PM: After a full day of negotiations between the WGA and AMPTP, the guild’s lawyers are reviewing what the studios call their “best and final offer.” We understand that the WGA is going over deal points, and we should have more clarity on Sunday.

The article goes on to include all sorts of “insights” into what was going on in the negotiating session via anonymous sources.

None of them writers.

Then came this via email at 10:05PM:

No buzz. No anonymous gossip. No reference to a “best and final offer.”

As always, the Guild has maintained radio silence about the negotiations except for official statements like the above.

The simple fact the two sides are meeting again today for “bargaining” blows up the whole “best and final offer” tactic.

It must be utterly exhausting being a member of the WGA Negotiating Committee. Assuming we end up with a fair deal, these folks should never have to buy a drink in L.A. or N.Y.C. again.

Mazel tov to the committee members today … and if need be tomorrow … and tomorrow …
