Every day during the strike, I will post a relevant article here.

I have been a card carrying Writers Guild of America member since 1987. Within a year, I was picketing studios during the 1988 strike. It lasted 153 days. When I sold my spec script K-9, I purchased a house in Laurel Canyon with two other writers. In order to survive that strike, I had to sell my investment in the house. Eventually, that work stoppage settled and we were back to work.

Every three years, there were rumors of potential strikes, but the next one didn’t occur until 2007. That one lasted 100 days.

Now Hollywood writers are on strike again. Only this one feels existential. Quite literally, it seems like the AMPTP seem hell bent on destroying any semblance of what used to be a writing career in Hollywood.

I teach at a film school in Chicago now. My income isn’t derived from the studios, networks, or streaming services. While there’s plenty of production in Chicago and I am joining fellow writers in picketing here, that’s not enough.

I’m committed to posting one article per day at Go Into The Story throughout the duration of this strike. I will feature news, updates, op-ed pieces, and resources to support my fellow writers in taking on this insane attempt by the AMPTP to break the Guild and eviscerate the role of writers in the film and television business.

If you’re a Guild member, I’ll do what little I can to promote our cause through social media.

If you’re not yet a Guild member, you should track these articles to educate yourself about why this strike is essential to your future.

If you have no interest in writing, but are concerned about what is going on in Hollywood, what you will get here is unambiguous support for writers versus the greed-heads on the other side of the desk.

I have a theological background. When I was in graduate school at Yale, my specific area of focus was primitive Christianity and the emergence of the New Testament. Here is the harsh truth from 1 Timothy 6:10:

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Hollywood “suits” have always been about profits. I have no problem with that. But once the streaming services came along, it’s like the suits have gone mad. I can’t help but think that it is their love of money which has led them astray and created so “many sorrows.”

What’s happening in Hollywood is an extension of what’s occurring around the world with corporations acting like drug addicts who need a fix. is More … more … more. And that more is money.

In Hollywood, it is especially egregious because the suits are quite literally not only only making billions off the creative effort of writers, they are at the same time trying to break our backs.

Do they think that generative artificial intelligence can replace human writers? If they do, watch out. You’re next. Directors. Actors. Development executives. If left unchecked, their insane pursuit of greater profits will destroy the film and television business as we know it.
