Update: 2025 London Screenwriters’ Festival
Leading a session at the 2018 LSF

More information on my appearance at this year’s event: April 24–27.

Last week, I posted an announcement about my upcoming appearance at the 2025 London Screenwriters’ Festival including two presentations: The Five Character Archetypes Reimagined and An Honest Assessment of So-Called Screenwriting Rules.

I’m excited to announce I also will be leading a daylong learning opportunity on Thursday, April 24th: Writing a Marketable Screenplay.

Over the last few years due to the popularity of my book The Protagonist’s Journey: An Introduction to Character-Driven Screenwriting and Storytelling, I have been invited to speak and teach in countries across Europe including France, Spain, Germany, England, Switzerland, and Greece. These appearances have been a great opportunity to share the creative empowerment that derives from character-driven storytelling.

At these events, the many conversations I have had with international filmmakers has also been an educational experience for me. One thing I have learned: No matter the origin country of film or TV business, it has never been more important for creatives to write screenplays that appeal to buyers on a personal and practical basis.

That means what story you choose to write and how you write it needs to impress everyone on that side of the table — managers, agents, producers, network and movie execs — with a screenplay that has a strong emotional core and an identifiable audience.

The daylong Writing a Marketable Screenplay seminar addresses both of those critical concerns in four integrated sessions:

  • How to Generate, Develop, and Assess Story Concepts: Learn practical tools to guide you toward working with strong story ideas, ones that have identifiable commercial appeal while playing to your personal strengths and writer’s passion.
  • Expressing Your Writer’s Voice Through Screenplay Style: Explore examples from contemporary screenplays which will inspire you to convey your unique voice to engage the reader and tell stories which promise to entertain audiences.
  • Create a Compelling Protagonist: A fundamental goal with your screenplay is to create a sense of audience identification with your story’s central character. This session identifies key psychological dynamics you can explore to craft a captivating Protagonist.
  • Six Essential Character Development Tools: Learn a group of writing exercises which immerse you in the lives of your story’s characters empowering you to tap into their unique, entertaining qualities.

Concept. Voice. Protagonist. Character. Four keys to writing a story which is infused with your distinct personality and excites buyers with its commercial potential. In other words, a marketable screenplay.
