Write a logline based on the descriptions of movies and television series featured in The Protagonist’s Journey … and win a free autographed copy of my book!

My book The Protagonist’s Journey: An Introduction to Character-Driven Screenwriting and Storytelling was released on March 29, 2022. For over three months, it was Amazon’s #1 Best Seller in Film & Television. It occupied that position as recently as two weeks ago.

The book has been endorsed by 30+ professional screenwriters, novelists, and academics. Here are a few of those endorsements:
“In his decade of teaching, culminating with this book, Scott has pulled off a remarkable feat. He’s made a complete compendium of the screenwriting craft while continuing to encourage the antithesis of formulaic writing.”
— Peter Craig, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman
“Scott’s book is an indispensable tool for unlocking scripts through character and a great tool for any screenwriter.”
— Lisa Joy, Westworld, Reminiscence
“Scott Myers is a canny and thoughtful teacher of the craft of screenwriting, and brings all of his impressive knowledge, insight and experience to The Protagonist’s Journey: this book is full of essential lessons for the novice, and crucial reminders for the professional.”
— Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Writer/Producer, Lost, The Dark Crystal, Cowboy Rebop
“Brilliant and energizing, The Protagonist’s Journey is a new bible for writers to take their awesome movie idea and evolve it into a living breathing screenplay. I absolutely loved this book and will be using it as an essential tool for making my next script the best it can be.”
— Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith, Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You
Apart from its focus on character-driven storytelling, some distinctive aspects of the book:
- Applies concepts of Carl Jung to screenwriting and story theory, thus, going beyond Joseph Campbell and the Hero’s Journey
- Includes both movies and television as case studies and examples
- Features contemporary titles, not just classic movies
- Uses film and TV references which reflect diversity across genres, ethnicity, and gender identification
One of my goals was to make The Protagonist’s Journey as relevant as possible to a new generation of cinematic storytellers, especially important in my view given the current convergence of movies and television. In fact, I include over 300 hundred film and TV examples in my book.
Given that, I thought we could have a bit of fun. I’ve taken descriptions of 10 movies and television series included in my book:
Almost Famous
Back to the Future
Community
Dexter
Edge of Tomorrow
Fleabag
Get Out
Home Alone
The Iron Giant
John Wick
I input those descriptions into an AI word cloud generator and came up with this:
I’m going to run a week-long contest: Come up with a logline using words from the word cloud. Or loglines (you may enter as many times as you want).
NOTE: One way your logline will be assessed is by how many words from the word cloud you use in your logline. If only one or two, less points. If five or six, more points.
BIG NOTE: Please CAPITALIZE each word cloud word in your logline.
For example: A YOUNG WOMAN on a WEEKEND VACATION from COMMUNITY COLLEGE finds herself trapped in DELOREAN with an ALIEN SERIAL KILLER.
Granted, that is a truly awful logline. However, it not only demonstrates how to capitalize the word cloud words in your logline, but also conveys the spirit of fun I hope you will embrace as part of the challenge.
At the end of the week, I will select three winners, each of whom will receive by mail a free autographed copy of The Protagonist’s Journey.

I’ll run the contest through Midnight (Pacific), Sunday October 9, 2022.
Again: Write a logline using the words from the word cloud pictured above. Points will be given for creativity, originality, and the number of word cloud words you use.
Three people will receive a personally autographed copy of The Protagonist’s Journey.
Of course, if you’re a fan of Go Into The Story and character-driven storytelling, you can always purchase the book:
Also you may choose to support what I do here on the blog by purchasing an autographed copy of The Protagonist’s Journey.
Good luck with the contest. Let’s have some fun this week!
UPDATE: The competition is now closed. Congratulations to S. Soufflé and Alyssa Marshall! You have won. To receive your personally autographed copy of my book, email me your address: GITSblog@gmail.com.
