Molly Tuttle

Or if you will the singer-songwriter meets the Hero’s Journey in her new song “Take the Journey” featuring her distinctive claw hammer guitar style.

This ol’ fart recently subscribed to Spotify and I discovered this awesome song by Molly Tuttle: “Take the Journey.” It’s acoustic. It features some wonderful guitar work and Molly’s vintage vocals. And the lyrics evoke the spirit of Joseph Campbell:

Cold, cold nights lead to cold, cold mornings
The road keeps going and it never seems to end
Lonely hearts that cry without warning
When the light ain’t shining from around the bend

Take the journey
No matter where it starts or where it ends
Take the journey
Someday you’ll make it back home again

You can try to control the weather
But the rain inside you is still gonna fall
Days of drought will merely starve you
There’s no use hiding, we gotta face it all

Take the journey
No matter where it starts or where it ends
Take the journey
Someday you’ll make it back home again

Skies are falling all around you
Who will protect you from your deepest fears?
Take the hand of the one besides you
Let the fire guide you ’til the path is clear

Take the journey
No matter where it starts or where it ends
Take the journey
Someday you’ll make it back home again
Someday you’ll make it back home

Check out Molly’s version of the song:

I’m writing a book called “The Protagonist’s Journey” and this song has become my new personal anthem.

As J. Campbell says of the hero at the beginning of a story, “They are just making do… they need to change.”

Initially, they may refuse the call — “You can try to control the weather” — but fate beckons and will not be denied — “But the rain inside you is still gonna fall… There’s no use hiding, we gotta face it all.”

Departing the Old World and entering the New World, the old ways of being are found wanting and get deconstructed — “Skies are falling all around you.”

With coping skills and defense mechanisms tossed aside, the Protagonist has to confront their deepest existential concerns — “Who will protect you from your deepest fears?”

But along the way, the Protagonist meets allies, Mentors and Attractors who aid them in their journey — “Take the hand of the one besides you.”

And the Protagonist’s Need, the essence of their Authentic Nature, emerges into the light of consciousness as the basis of their New Self — “Let the fire guide you ’til the path is clear.”

Yes, indeed, take the journey. Heroes. Heroines. Writers. Creatives. Follow your bliss. Or as Carl Jung said, “Become who you are.”

Take the journey to discover your true self.
