Pretty much ever since I broke into the movie business in 1987, I have been keeping track of spec script deals. This list is, as far as I know, the most comprehensive of its type. Not only an historical record, but also a great resource for brainstorming new story ideas.

Bear in mind, the value of a spec script is not solely determined by whether it gets optioned or sells. Indeed, a spec script can jump-start a writing career in Hollywood without ever directly making the writer a dime. How?
As a writing sample. A representation of your creativity, understanding of the craft, and expression of your unique voice.
A good spec script can land you representation, meetings with producers, studio executives, and talent, consideration for OWAs (Open Writing Assignments), establish or redefine your writing brand, and much more.
So while 2,000+ spec script deals in a quarter century may seem like a lot, there are thousands more specs over that same time period which didn’t sell, yet benefited writers in myriad ways.
Bottom line: While the odds against achieving financial success as a screenwriter are significant, writing a spec script is still the most direct, effective way to break into the business.
