Spec Script Deal: “With The 8th Pick”

Warner Bros. acquires sports drama spec script “With the 8th Pick” written by Alex Sohn and Gavin Johannsen. Via Deadline:

We’ve confirmed that Alex Sohn and Gavin Johannsen‘s spec screenplay With the 8th Pick, about the behind-the-scenes 1996 NBA drafting of Kobe Bryant, has landed at Warner Bros.

It’s being described as Social Network meets Air meets Moneyball with a thriller bent.

It reminds me of Draft Day which was the #1 script on the 2012 Black List. Kevin Costner starred in the movie.

Both writers are repped by Verve. Sohn is managed by Lit Entertainment Group. Johannsen is managed by The Gotham Group.

This is the 8th spec script deal announced in August.

By my count, this is the 19th spec script deal in 2025.

There were 14 spec script deals year-to-date in 2024.
