Spec Script Deal: “Voicemails for Isabelle”

Sony Pictures Entertainment acquires romantic comedy spec script “Voicemails for Isabelle” written by Leah McKendrick. Via Deadline:

Sharon Maguire is in talks to direct Voicemails For Isabelle, a romantic comedy that will star Hailee Steinfeld for Sony Pictures. Sony preempted the spec by Leah McKendrick. The film is about a young woman trying to navigate her dating life in Los Angeles. Though it is the 21st century, there is a bit of You’ve Got Mail in that technology is used to bring together a couple.

For a sub-genre which is supposedly dead, romantic comedies sure seem to be alive and kicking. Once again, Hollywood’s conventional wisdom is more about convention than wisdom.

McKendrick is repped by the Abrams Artists Agency and Aptitude Entertainment.

By my count, this is the 12th spec script deal in 2019.

There were 14 spec script deals year-to-date in 2018.
