Spec Script Deal: “The Pick Up”

Amazon Studios acquires comedy spec script “The Pick Up” written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. Via Deadline:

Sources called it a heist comedy and Murphy would play a guy who becomes smitten with a woman and finds himself mixed up in a heist attempt.

That’s Murphy as in Eddie Murphy. The script is part of a package with Tim Story to direct. As a result: “the prospect of the elements drove the bidding up to seven figures for the script.”

Great news for the writers and the moribund spec script market, but it reminds me that in the Golden Age of Spec Scripts, deals like this happened at least once and often twice a month.

The writers are repped by WME and Silver Lake Entertainment.

By my count, this is the 4th spec script deal in 2023.
