Spec Script Deal: “Hurt People”

Netflix acquires legal thriller spec script “Hurt People” written by Melissa London Hilfers. Via Deadline:

Netflix has locked down rights to Hurt People, a legal thriller spec from Monarch creator Melissa London Hilfers, sources tell Deadline.

Details as to the plot of the film are under wraps. Written amid last year’s writer’s strike, it marks the rising scribe’s fifth feature spec sale to date. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are attached to produce for Berlanti/Schechter Films.

Setting up five feature spec script is especially impressive given how lethargic the spec market has been the last few years.

By my count, this is the 14th spec script deal in 2024.

There were 7 spec script deals year-to-date in 2023. Note: Those numbers were impacted by the WGA strike from May through September 2023 when no spec scripts could be sold.
