Screenwriting 101: Julia Hart

“My students would always get frustrated when we would talk about the themes that the author was using. They would always ask, ‘Did they really think about all this before they started writing it?’ And I don’t think that they do or I don’t think that good writers do. Of course, when you’re writing a cohesive world, the themes are going to rise out of it. And I think that if you think too much about, at least for me, if I think too much about what my themes are, it becomes laborious, over the top, like hitting you over the head. I just try to think about a cohesive world, and I think that ultimately themes arise from that.”
