“I’m quite simple‑minded, and I tend to begin in quite a simple way. I start at the beginning and I write until the end, in sequence. At that point, the number of the sequences of the film are very crystallized in my mind when I start to write, even if others aren’t. I get a draft that has four or five very strong sequences in it, and the rest is connective tissue. The subsequent drafts are about getting that connective tissue up to the same level as those sequences.”
