“Saving Private Ryan”: Minute By Minute Breakdown

A podcast analysis with MovieRob and me about the dramatic scene: What to do with the German POW “Steamboat Willie”

Since July 2021, a cinephile known as MovieRob has hosted a podcast where he analyzes movies minute by minute, quite literally going through a movie and spending a half-hour or so on each minute of screen time.

It’s a cool concept, so when Rob reached out to me to join him to analyze the movie Saving Private Ryan, I happily agreed.

The five-minute sequence we discussed: Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) and the soldiers under his command must figure out what to do with a German solider they have captured, one they dub Steamboat Willie.

Minute 96: Robin Williams Routine

Minute 97: Demonize the Enemy

Minute 98: Whammo Theory

Minute 99: Band of Brothers in the Breach of Battle

Minute 100: Out of Left Field Thing

I learned a lot about the movie during my conversation with Rob.
