Ria, I tell my students much the same thing: First draft, write it however it comes out. If characters “walk” or “look” all over the place, that’s fine. The point is to get the damn thing done (first draft). That’s receptive writing. After the draft is done, then they can engage in executive writing which may include “shopping” for stronger verbs.
Two Writing Functions: Receptive and Executive
One that allows your characters to come alive. One to craft sentences which draw the reader into the scene.
