The movie version of the opening:

This is yet another example of using the opening scene to drop the audience into the middle of things. In this case, the fact that Thelma and Louise have decided on a plan, i.e., to go on a trip. In other words, the plot is already set into motion before the movie starts. That gives the opening a nice kick to start things off.
