There’s an interesting backstory to this project. Michael Blake was Kevin Costner’s friend. He first wrote Dances with Wolves as a screenplay. It didn’t sell. Costner advised him to write a novel. As I recall, Blake slept on Costner’s couch throughout pounding out the novel. And the rest, as they say, is history.
