One interesting way to look at each of the characters in the story -- Anne, Paul, Laura, The Man/Bill, The Woman/Catherine, and even Lucy who is referred to, but never shown (because she is dead) -- is that they are all Tricksters. That is, if you look at each moment, each scene through the POV of Anthony's flawed perspective.
Anne is sometimes an ally, but often an enemy in her desire to get Anthony into a care facility.
Paul is the closest to a Nemesis figure because he dares to challenge Anthony and his behavior.
Laura because she is a caregiver (Enemy), but reminds Anthony of Lucy (Ally).
Bill and Catherine because they are perceived as threats (the Man / the Woman), but actually are people who help Anthony in the care facility.
Lucy because of his affection for his other daughter, but of course, she is dead.
Leaning into the Trickster dynamic is effective because it is an extension of the "tricks" Anthony's mind plays on him as a result of his dementia.
