Mark, your comment about “all the flashbacks” echoed my sentiments. In fact, I’m thinking about doing a blog post about TV series and movies which seem to be increasingly embracing multiple timelines: Sharp Objects, Westworld, True Detective 3, and here with Destroyer. I’ve had conversations with my university students in which they say they prefer these type of story structures because they find a straight linear narrative boring.
After all these years of the supposed ‘rule’ about not using flashbacks, I wonder if, indeed, there is a growing preference for multiple timeline movies, we might see a renaissance of this narrative device.
