Julian, I don't think it's fair to refer to as "pilferage" in this respect: Hollywood writers wllingly make this deal. A deal with the "devil" I suppose, but one which can pay a lot of money.

No one puts a gun to our head forcing us to sell a literary produce we've written. We could choose to retain IP ownership, then go off and attempt to make the movie on our own. Then we have to distribute it and market it. You can see why writers opt into the Hollywood system, especially if the sales price is substantial.
