Ira, I’m reminded a story I heard about the great composer Stravinsky. A student asked him if he felt restricted by having only the 88 keys on the piano keyboard to work with in his compositions. Stravinsky replied [paraphrase], “Not at all. Those 88 keys create a structure for me. I don’t have to worry about the boundaries and within it, I have complete freedom to do as I please.”

Obviously, we can bend and shape a story in all sorts of ways, but having those Beginning — Middle — End movements provides a structure, one which I see all about me in life and nature, and within that structure we are free to write anything at all.
