Fandango correspondent Karama Horne chatted with Phil Lord and Chris Miller, co-writers and producers of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
I love interviews with Lord and Miller for a lot of reasons, but perhaps my main one is because — what else! — they constantly talk about the characters and the story’s emotional life. To wit:
“The bottom line is that the the movie is grounded in Miles and his family and his relationship with Gwen and the other Spider people. As long as we stay rooted in that, we’re in business. The other stuff is exciting and thrilling to see in the movie theater and we’re so proud of how it got realized, but the end of the day, it’s your emotional engagement with Miles that keeps you involved.”
Spectacle can be great. And believe me, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has got lots and lots of spectacle. But “the other stuff” only has meaning if the story has at its core “emotional engagement.” And that comes through the characters.
