Here is the interview:

It’s interesting how after many years of turning away from doing a possible sequel to the original three movies, Lana had an idea for a story come to her full-blown in response to the grief she was feeling about the death of her parents and a friend of her wife. Finding Neo and Trinity again in her creative life provided her a kind of comfort. And here we are with the movie.

It’s often said that the best stories are personal stories. Given this background about Lana’s experience as a grieving adult child and friend, even with all the pyrotechnics of the Matrix universe, at its core is an emotional connection the filmmaker had with Neo and Trinity … and Lana’s own life.
