The science fiction movie Finch debuts on Apple TV+ this weekend. Plot summary: “On a post-apocalyptic earth, a robot, built to protect the life of his creator’s beloved dog, learns about life, love, friendship and what it means to be human.”
I was interested to learn the backstory of the project and did some research. Lo and behold, I stumbled upon a short video with the film’s co-screenwriter Craig Luck. It turns out he originated the project when he was a film school student at the University for the Creative Arts in the United Kingdom.
This is an amazing story. Luck writes the script BIOS as a short film while obtaining at B.A. at the University. With a budget too high to get funding as a short, he writes it as a feature length project … eventually co-writing the script with Ivor Powell (who was an associate producer on Blade Runner) … who then gets Miguel Sapochnik attached as a director … who then gets the script to ImageMovers (filmmaker Robert Zemeckis’ company) … and that leads to Steven Spielberg … and Tom Hanks … and this!
How inspiring. As Craig says, “You’ve got a unique voice and if you believe in that voice, then you need to make that voice heard.”
Reminds me of an article I wrote: The Spirit of the Spec. Create it and put it out there. You never know what can happen.
