Conversation with writer-director of Netflix movie “Mudbound”.

Via Indiewire, a Filmmaker Toolkit interview with Dee Rees whose TV directing credits include Empire and When We Rise, and writing-directing film credits include Pariah and the upcoming An Uncivil War. She co-wrote (with Virgil Williams) the indie period piece Mudbound.

Plot summary: Two Mississippi families — one black, one white — confront the brutal realities of prejudice, farming and friendship in a divided World War II era. Recently I watched the movie (which is a Netflix original). It’s not only a compelling saga, it has an interesting narrative structure, following six storylines including voice-over narration for each character. In effect, six Protagonists. This is a feature of the novel written by Hillary Jordan and effectively translated into the movie.
