I was fascinated to read the script, then the breakdown because what I remember about the movie is how it moved from scene to scene, oftentimes without any obvious narrative drive, you know, that indie thing of a scene… then a scene… then another scene… little propulsion one to the other. But the movie actually has a pretty clean four act structure (Act Two Part A, Act Two Part B comprising the Middle) and it just works.
Perhaps it’s because once you hit that transition point in the middle of the story, everything that’s been set up starts to accelerate toward their inevitable conclusions, that gnawing sense of dread, fearing the worst about what will happen to Moonee and her mother.
I love this movie, my favorite film of 2017. I look forward to delving into it this week. Join me!
