I think what Chris Vogler did with The Writer's Journey is impressive. I like the book. I even saw Chris give a presentation at the WGA in 1988 where he laid out the basics of what he eventually put into his book.

I also think that some writers have misapplied what Chris wrote, as if it's some sort of structural code. To the point, where I've read comments from time to time, as with one producer, who said, "I hate the hero's journey." Why? Because it feels formulaic.

That's not what J. Campbell believed. And I don't think that's what C. Vogler believes. But somehow, some people are approaching the twelve "stages" as articulated in The Writer's Journey as being prescriptive of story structure, not descriptive of the variety of ways one may approach story.

But as I say, I like the book.
