How A24 took over Hollywood
The Academy Award winning movie “Moonlight” is just one of many notable A24 movies

A video overview of the successful movie and television production and distribution company.

Off the top of my head, here are some notable A24 films: Ex Machina, The Lighthouse, Room, The Witch, Midsommar, The Florida Project, Lady Bird, Under the Skin, The Farewell, Uncut Gems, First Reformed, The Spectacular Now, A Ghost Story, and of course, Everything Everywhere All At Once.

I’m sure I’m forgetting some.

Since its founding in 2012 as A24 Films (renamed in 2016 as simply A24), the company has consistently been involved with some of the most noteworthy films released each year.

I love A24. I’m not alone. They’ve become such a well known brand, they sell their own merch.

You can even become a card-carrying member of AAA24, the company’s own fan club.

The other day, I stumbled on this video from Vox media: How A24 took over Hollywood. Here it is:

For decades, Hollywood has operated with this business principle when it comes to the projects they green light: Similar but different. I think it’s fair to say that many, if not most consumers think what the studios, networks, and streaming service produce and distribute is more similar than different.

Not A24. They definitely emphasize the different aspect of that business principle. You can see that sensibility not only in their movies, but also in the television programming they have produced since expanding into that arena: At Home with Amy Sedaris, Ramy, Euphoria, and Mr. Corman.

Here are some other A24 movies I just remembered: Aftersun, Eighth Grade, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, Minari, The End of the Tour, First Cow, and Past Lives, which I recently saw and I’m sure is going to receive a lot of attention during award season.

I am so thankful this company exists. So many movies which have had a profound impact on me.

What’s your favorite A24 movie?

Trivia question: What is the origin of the company’s name? Watch the video and find out.
