Jean - Protagonist

Here is the list of significant characters in the movie with my take on their respective archetype function:

Jean - Protagonist

Eddie - Trickster

Harry - Attractor

Cal - Mentor

Teri - Mentor

Art - Mentor

Paul - Attractor

White Mike - Nemesis

One intriguing aspect of the story is how the Nemesis dynamic is played out. Sure, there are Evil Minions who create tension throughout Act Two. Then there is White Mike, the actual Nemesis, who is revealed late in the story. But for much of Act One and early into Act Two, Jean's opposition dynamic is provided primarily by the mystery of... WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON. Jean is thrust into chaos by God knows what. She has little to no idea what's happening and why, but it IS happening and a threat to her and her son's very existence. The movie is a good study for those of us/you who have a story in which the Protagonist and Nemesis don't actually intersect directly until Act Three.

Eddie as Trickster? He's an ally in that he's Jean's husband. He does, indeed, get her a child, but doesn't clue her in as to why now, the background of the child, etc. Then he disappears. He becomes in effect a Macguffin. Everybody's looking for Eddie, but he's nowhere to be found. And whatever he's done has turned him into an enemy for Jean because his actions have put her on the run and her life in jeopardy.

Cal's entire family - except Paul - are Mentors because they KNOW stuff. And they take care of Jean. However, Paul is an Attractor, a character for whom Jean demonstrates maternal care, an older version of Harry.

So yet again, a movie which features these five primary character archetypes.
