Go Into The Story at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival

Daily reports from Park City starting today.

I have been a guest at the Austin Film Festival four times. London Screenwriters’ Festival twice. Same with the Willamette Writers Conference. But never the Sundance Film Festival.

Until now.

Today I’m flying to Salt Lake City, then to Park City to spend the next six days at the famed independent film festival.

And get this… I’ve got a press pass.

I’m here as part of the contingent from the DePaul University School of Cinematic Arts, a trial run to see if we make this an annual event for our students.

I certainly hope so.

This year, I will be connecting with my pals at the Black List and many of the filmmakers whose movies premiered at this year’s Festival including Hala written and directed by Minhail Baig. I was one of Minnie’s mentors at the first Black List Feature Writers Labs in 2013 and have stayed in touch and supported Minnie’s filmmaking career ever since.

I will be reporting from the Festival each day, a combination of movie reviews and personal reflections. There are also two DePaul students who will be sharing their experiences at Sundance.

If you’re a fan of independent films, I encourage you to join the conversation here at GITS this week.

And if by chance you’re attending the Festival, give me a shout out!
