Dave, did you hate Greenberg enough to want to keep READING the script? In other words, did you find him compelling? Perhaps so given you “could hardly wait to see what shit Greenberg was going to spout next.”
The major studios would NEVER put out a movie with a Protagonist as unlikable as Greenberg. But Noah Baumbach can do it because… he’s Noah Baumbach. It’s an indie movie. Those audiences are much more open to nuance, even forgiving obnoxious characters (see Sideways).
