“Andy crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of shit smelling foulness I can’t even imagine, or maybe I just don’t want to. Five hundred yards… that’s the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile.”

The Shawshank Redemption (1994), screenplay by Frank Darabont, short story by Stephen King

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: Baptism.

Trivia: When Andy has his last conversation with Red before he escapes, Andy talks about going to Mexico. Red tells him, “Stop it, Andy.” That’s just a shitty pipe dream.” Andy quite literally escapes crawling through a shitty pipe. Intentional or not, it’s quite a setup.

Dialogue On Dialogue: This scene is a metaphorical baptism… and one of the most powerful in cinema history.
