A Story Idea Each Day for a Month — Day 30
Harriet who is old enough to not give a shit.

This is the 11th year in a row I’ve run this series in April. Why a story idea each day for the month? Because the best way to come up with a great story idea is to come up with a lot of ideas. And the best way to come up with a lot of ideas is to be proactive in sourcing story ideas.

Today’s story: My grandson’s live-in girlfriend hates me and doesn’t want me to stay at their home — should I still leave him all my money?

I have one grandson. I plan to leave all my money to him. He now has a new live-in girlfriend who finds me problematic. We live in different states. When I go to see my grandson, I usually stay at his home. I helped pay for it. However, I am no longer welcome as she does not like me. I have great friends who live nearby who are there for me. Shall I still leave him all of my money

This is an easy one. A comedy. Harriet is 90 years old. Her only son Henry died 12 years ago. She has one family member left: Larry, a thirty-two year-old auto mechanic of zero ambition. He marries Jasmine, former pole-dancing stripper who senses an economic opportunity here. When she discovers that Larry is going to inherit Harriet’s wealth, reported to be over $2M, she figures that is her road to financial security. However…

On wedding day, as the bride and groom say “I do,” Harriet has a stroke.

Guess what? Harriet is going to recuperate in the newlywed’s home. Harriet is suspicious of Jasmine. Jasmine only cares about Harriet because of her money. The sooner the old bat kicks the bucket, the better. But then…

In tending to Harriet’s needs and spending time with her, Harriet becomes a kind of Mentor figure to Jasmine. Harriet has her Bucket List which Jasmine has to handle (due to her desire to keep Harriet disposed to give her inheritance to her grandson). But Harriet’s wisdom is causing Jasmine to reexamine her life and priorities.

That’s when Jasmine’s ex-husband Butch shows up. Recently released from prison after his murder conviction was overturned (wrongly), he takes a strong interest in Harriet’s financial interests.

Now Jasmine becomes Harriet’s ally in a game of potentially lethal cat and mouse…

Each day in April, I invite you to join me in comments to do some brainstorming. Take each day’s story idea and see what it can become when we play around with it. These are valuable skills for a writer to develop.

See you in RESPONSES to hear YOUR take on this story idea. And come back tomorrow for another Story Idea Each Day For A Month.
