Of course, that's always been a source of movie and TV projects in Hollywood, but the last few years, it feels like the void created by the dearth of spec script deals has been backfilled wit more book deals.

The one thing common to book and short story deals: strong story concepts. Increasingly, acquisitions reflect marketing concerns. Marketing is made much easier if they are promoting a movie or TV series with an easily identifiable story hook. There's so much competition and 'noise' in the consumer marketplace, it's almost a requirement nowadays to grab a potential audience's attention with a story with a specific distinctive element that can grab people's attention.
