2025 Zero Draft Thirty March Challenge: Day 4
One month. FADE IN to FADE OUT. Creativity meets Productivity.
One month. FADE IN to FADE OUT. Creativity meets Productivity.
Zero Draft Thirty: Day 4.
Write an entire draft of a script in September — FADE IN. FADE OUT. Or any sort of creative goal you have in front of you.
Feature length movie screenplay. Original TV pilot. Rewrite a current project. Break a story in prep. Generate a month’s worth of story concepts.
Whatever you feel will ratchet your creative ambitions into overdrive…
DO THAT!
As for me, I will spend the month rewriting a feature film comedy spec script. I’m spending most of the month working out my revision plan, then heading off for an extended writer’s retreat to knock out this draft.
If you join the Challenge, I will be right there with you writing each and every day in March! Let’s do this together!

Today’s Daily Dialogue Video
I have dedicated the 2025 Zero Draft Thirty March Challenge to memorable movie dialogue. Today: Blade Runner.
Here is a script version of the moment:

It’s not quite the actual movie dialogue:

Back to the script. Here is a following side of dialogue which did not make the final cut:

Why did I pick this dialogue? First, it’s one of movie science fiction’s most memorable moments. But more important, the way it references death.
Yes, death.
In my final year at Yale, I decided to take a year off from my goal of getting a doctorate and pursue my passion for music. I knew in my gut, if I didn’t do that, if I never followed my creative bliss, at the end of my life, I would regret it. Like existentially regret that choice.
So, here you are … a writer. You have a story staring you in the face.
Whatever you do, write it.
Do not live to regret not following your bliss.
Love your life … every second of it … including your creative life … your bliss. The story you’re writing now … give yourself over to the joy of discovering where this storytelling journey takes you.
You’ve seen things. Now share what you’ve seen with the world.
Today’s Dalton Trumbo Award winner: Jonathan Melikidse.
Over at the Zero Draft Thirty Facebook group, Jonathan posted this:

And this:

So a bit of history. Somewhere in the annals of the Zero Draft Thirty legend, we Zeronauts took the concept of a writing sprint and transformed it into our own thing: a writing scamper.
Why? If I remember correctly, it was how a scamper is a more frolicking, fun approach to writing, like a zero draft.
And from that appeared our ZD30 spirit animal: Scamper the Hamster. Scamper takes many forms such as these:

Ah, yes. The Scamper-a-thon. Twenty-four hours, each one hosted by a writer somewhere in the world. A chance to write along with a virtual friend.
Here’s the thing, as Jonathan points out: You can do a writing scamper anytime. While you’re at it, drop by here and invite someone to join you.
It’s a way of embracing how we’re all in this together … pounding out pages … Fade Out firmly in view.
Thus for that reminder, the recipient of today’s Dalton Trumbo Award is Jonathan Melikidse!

By the way, I should mention that Jonathan served as the Scamper-a-Thon moderator for several years. Thanks, JM!

It’s not a time to die …
It’s a time to write.
So …
SCAMPER ON!
