2025 London Screenwriters’ Festival
Leading a presentation at the 2018 LSF

The event runs through Friday, April 25–27, 2025 … I’ll be there!

The London Screenwriter’s Festival is one of my very favorite public events. Writers from all around the world gather at Regents College for a three-day immersion into the screenwriting craft. The atmosphere is buoyant, the excitement palpable, and the learning opportunities are outstanding.

I’ve been invited back to host three presentations. The first one — How to Writer a Marketable Screenplay — takes place from 10am-5pm on Thursday, April 24th. It is comprised of four 75-minute sessions. More details TBA.

The other two events are already locked down.

The Five Character Archetypes Reimagined

Fresh insights, new case studies, and contemporary applications of the game-changing character archetype system that has influenced writers worldwide.

Date: Saturday, 26 April
Time: 12:30
Room: Tuke Hall

Back by popular demand — but completely reinvented for 2025! Scott Myers returns with an updated version of his renowned character archetype framework. If you’ve heard about the famous five (Protagonist, Nemesis, Attractor, Mentor, Trickster) but missed the original sessions — or if you’re ready to see how these archetypes function in our rapidly evolving media landscape — this is your chance to experience this game-changing approach through an entirely fresh lens.

Scott reveals how these timeless character functions are being twisted, subverted, and reimagined by today’s most innovative storytellers. Packed with all-new case studies and contemporary examples, this session demonstrates how modern narratives are pushing the boundaries of traditional character relationships while still harnessing their fundamental psychological power.

This completely updated session will transform how you approach character dynamics in today’s complex storytelling landscape. Don’t miss this chance to see how timeless character principles are being reinvented for a new era of storytelling.

An Honest Assessment of So-Called Screenwriting Rules

Cut through the noise of conventional screenwriting wisdom and discover which "rules" actually matter – and which ones are holding you back.

Date: Sunday, 27 April
Time: 13:40
Room: Tuke Hall

Never use voiceover!” “Your inciting incident must happen by page 12!” The screenwriting world is drowning in rules, formulas, and must-follow guidelines. But how many of these supposedly iron-clad commandments actually make your script better? And how many are just recycled opinions that have somehow become “law”?

In this refreshingly candid session, veteran screenwriting instructor Scott Myers takes a hard, honest look at the most common screenwriting rules and examines which ones deserve their hallowed status – and which ones need to be thrown out the window.

Stop letting arbitrary rules hold your creativity hostage. Whether you’re a rule-follower or a natural rebel, this session will help you understand when to color inside the lines – and when to throw away the coloring book entirely. Join Scott for an unflinching look at what really matters in the craft of screenwriting.

From my LAF appearance in 2017

Like everything, the LSF was impacted by the COVID pandemic. After being offered online for a few years, the Festival is back live and in-person.

You can check out all the current educational sessions here.

For the roster of speakers, both in-person and online, go here. There’s a lot of familiar faces and insightful people scheduled to appear.

If you’re a writer in the U.K. and Europe, the Festival is especially relevant for your creative journey.
