Today’s Writing Quote

“You can dress it up, but it comes down to the fact that a movie is only as good as its script.”

Today’s Inspirational Poem

A Spiral Notebook

By Ted Kooser

The bright wire rolls like a porpoise
in and out of the calm blue sea
of the cover, or perhaps like a sleeper
twisting in and out of his dreams,
for it could hold a record of dreams
if you wanted to buy it for that
though it seems to be meant for
more serious work, with its
college-ruled lines and its cover
that states in emphatic white letters,
5 SUBJECT NOTEBOOK. It seems
a part of growing old is no longer
to have five subjects, each
demanding an equal share of attention,
set apart by brown cardboard dividers,
but instead to stand in a drugstore
and hang on to one subject
a little too long, like this notebook
you weigh in your hands, passing
your fingers over its surfaces
as if it were some kind of wonder.

I love this poem. It’s a poem for writers. The tactile experience of writing, reflective of the magic and wonder of something emerging from nothing.

Today’s Anita Loos Award winner: Alex Vaz.

Over at the Zero Draft Thirty Facebook group page, Alex posted this

Draft is done. Now working through the songs. Yes, I’m writing a musical.

We’re beginning to hear from writers who have finished their zero drafts. Alex has an unusual one: a musical!

My wife and I just recently saw a revival performance of Tommy (The Musical). Here is a rendition of Pinball Wizard from the original cast.

Alex, I hope that inspires you and everyone else involved in this month’s Zero Draft Thirty Challenge.
