2022 Zero Draft Thirty March Challenge: Day 11

One month. FADE IN to FADE OUT. Creativity meets Productivity.

Write an entire draft of a script in March — FADE IN. FADE OUT. Or any sort of creative goal you have in front of you.

Feature length movie screenplay. Original TV pilot. Rewrite a current project. Break a story in prep. Generate a month’s worth of story concepts.

Whatever you feel will ratchet your creative ambitions into overdrive…

DO THAT!

As for me, I will spend the month co-writing a feature film spec script. It’s based on a story concept I came up with late last year and it may be the strongest comedy idea I’ve ever worked on. My writing partner and I have spent the first two months of the year on character development and breaking story. Now it’s time to jam out a first draft!

If you join the Challenge, I will be right there with you writing each and every day in March! Let’s do this together!

Today’s Writing Quote

“I don’t believe in rules for writing screenplays. What that gives you is formula, and the result will be formulaic.”
— Christopher Hampton

Today’s Inspirational Video

Some instant art on the sidewalks of NYC.

I can’t draw worth a lick let alone paint, so I’m always amazed by visual artists. Fortunately, I can write!

Today’s Loos Award winner: Jonathan Melikidse.

On Twitter (#ZD30SCRIPT), Jonathan tweeted this:

My response?

WHY THE HELL NOT!

Sure, the Challenge is technically about writing an entire screenplay in one month. But really what it’s about is a motivational tool to get writers to make progress on a project.

So, here’s Jonathan. It’s the 10th day of the Challenge. Hasn’t even selected a project yet. I say… go for it.

Pick something you’re passionate about, type Fade In, and see where the next three weeks take you. 20 pages … 40 pages … 60 pages …

Whatever number you end up with is precisely the amount of pages you would not have written had you not taken the Challenge.

One more piece of advice: Lean into your Protagonist. Follow their energy. Every writing session, connect with the Protagonist and see where they are emotionally and psychologically.

If their story is compelling, then allow it to compel you to write it.

For that confessional piece of inspiration, the recipient of today’s Ben Hecht Award is Jonathan Melikidse!

For your chance to win the Ben Hecht Award, one given away each day during the Challenge, post something inspiring, here on the blog, via Twitter, or the Facebook group.
