Feature length movie screenplay. Original TV pilot. Rewrite a current project. Break a story in prep. Generate a month’s worth of story concepts.

Today’s Writing Quote

“Audiences go to movies to feel. When the movie becomes too mechanical instead of organic, audiences detach from the film.”

— Simon Kinberg

Today’s Inspirational Poem

A Spiral Notebook

By Ted Kooser

The bright wire rolls like a porpoise
in and out of the calm blue sea
of the cover, or perhaps like a sleeper
twisting in and out of his dreams,
for it could hold a record of dreams
if you wanted to buy it for that
though it seems to be meant for
more serious work, with its
college-ruled lines and its cover
that states in emphatic white letters,
5 SUBJECT NOTEBOOK. It seems
a part of growing old is no longer
to have five subjects, each
demanding an equal share of attention,
set apart by brown cardboard dividers,
but instead to stand in a drugstore
and hang on to one subject
a little too long, like this notebook
you weigh in your hands, passing
your fingers over its surfaces
as if it were some kind of wonder.

I love this poem. It’s a poem for writers. The tactile experience of writing, reflective of the magic and wonder of something emerging from nothing.

Today’s Loos Award winner: Joni Trumpold Brainerd.

Over in the Zero Draft Thirty Facebook group, Joni posted this photo of her writing desk:

Probably looks familiar, doesn’t it? Then Joni added this comment:

Gotta wrangle this mess into script shape. I’ll be in the zoom room but perhaps no video today — -as I am talking out dialogue and don’t wanna distract. Join in if you want. Bit lonesome in there right now…...

Zoom Room? What’s that you ask? Let me quote Trish Curtin, one of the Facebook group’s Super Moderators:

To kick off the March Challenge, Scamper the Hamster has decided he wants to try something new. A quiet write-along virtual scamper space for the entire month of the challenge on Zoom. Register once and drop in whenever you can, from wherever you are. With our videos on and our microphones muted we’ll keep each other company while we’re pounding out those pages. Un-mute for greetings and breaks for 10 minutes (5 minutes before and after the top of the hour only, it’s for writing, not chatting). Text chat is open, but it’s not compulsory to use it or even look at it. All the usual #ZD30 group rules apply — No selling, Promoting, Sharing pages etc — you can do that somewhere else. Play nice, and get that damned thing DONE!

That’s right, you can visit the Zoom Room and write alongside other Zero Draft Thirty Facebook group writers. I’ve done it a number of times and I have to say it’s a great motivator to write when you know there are other people writing alongside you. And every hour at the top of the hour, you can chat for five minutes before diving back in. In fact, I’m going to jump into the Zoom Room right now.
