Why track the spec script market?
First, this is a good way to put your finger on the pulse of the Hollywood development community. While spec scripts represent a low percentage of the movie industry’s overall acquisitions, they reflect story arenas which studios, production companies, and financiers perceive to be lucrative ones. This could be helpful in steering you toward or away from one of your own projects.
Second, to be a working screenwriter, you are well advised to learn about the business and the names you find in this roster of deals — buyers, representatives, writers, talent — are ones you should be aware of because someday, you may be sitting in a room with them for a general meeting or pitching a project. This way, you’ll know something about them.
Third, when a deal is announced, the subject matter of the project may impact the choice of story concepts you choose to take on. In other words, a project may sell which blows one of your stories out of the water as it’s the same idea. Better to learn that now than spend months on something which likely won’t sell due to something like it having been acquired already.
